Purpose

I am here to experience working with older students. I am in the MAT K-5 program currently and have toyed with the idea of going back to school again to work with college level students. I am excited to see how running a classroom works as I have not yet experienced that. I think that this is going to be a great learning experience for me and I will be able to take a lot with me that I will be able to use in the classroom.

What lessons can we learn from children?

There are many lessons that we can learn from children. They are so innocent and don't take life seriously. They say things that should not be said because they are too young to know what is politically correct. I think that children can teach adults many valuable lessons. When I am around children I remember to not sweat the small stuff. I could be in the worst mood or stressing over something so little in the grand scheme of things and being around children always brings me right back down to reality. When I worked in a childcare/pre-school in college, my purse was stolen by one of the mothers when she dropped off her kids. The oldest was 4 and was in my classroom and I did not realize that my purse was stolen, my first thought was that one of the kids hid my purse. So we had the kids looking everywhere and there was this one little girl who just sat there. I asked her what was wrong and she said she wasn't going to look for my purse because her mommy took it. I wasn't sure whether this was something that a little kid just made up or what so I started to ask questions about what my purse looked like and where it was when her mommy took it and sure enough, her mother had stolen my purse. I had to file a police report and the mother didn't step foot on the property again, from then on it was the grandparents that dropped/picked up the kids. Now I was freaking out because my "life" was in my purse, my wallet, phone, keys, etc. But before I got all caught up in that, I looked over and saw that this little girl who may only be 4 knows what is going on. She knew her mother took the purse and that it was wrong. She had this guilty look on her face all day and I felt horrible. It really made me realize that she had it way worse than I did. Her mom ended up being a heroin addict and ended up in jail by the time I was done working there for the summer and that poor little girl had such a bright future ahead of her that will forever be tainted because of her mom. Yeah, it may have been a pain to go to through everything I had to because of what happened, but that will never compare to what that little girl will have to go through because of her mother.
